| The
Western Michigan University alpine Ski & Snowboard teams are for those
of us who just can't get enough snow. It is designed for racing
Slalom and Giant Slalom racing in the Midwest with the United States
Collegiate Snowsports Association (USCSA). Almost every weekend in
the winter, we travel to resorts like Crystal Mountain, and Schuss
Mountain where we race against schools such as Michigan State University,
University of Michigan, Notre Dame, and Grand Valley State
University.
The organization is completely student run and is a
great opportunity to get out and meet people with that same love of the
sport that you have. We generally have over 60 members and have been
growing rapidly in the last few years which has required us to implement a
50 person limit. All you have to do is
sign up, and pay your seasonal dues which cover your race registration,
transportation, and lodging for all 5 weekends of racing (5 GS races and 5
SL races). The dues last year were $300 and there
are opportunities to make that money through fund raising opportunities,
so let us know if you need some help raising the money and we can suggest
some options for you.
**note: The dues do not cover lift tickets for
races. We get discounted rates, but please be sure to include lift
ticket costs in your budgeting. But again, if you need help raising
money, let us know and we can help you out.
No
racing experience is necessary to join and we can teach you the basics of
ski racing if you want. We have practice sessions on the snow once a week, but are NOT mandatory, but are encouraged because practice makes perfect (but
nobody is perfect, so I guess its your call). We also have our own
full set of training gates so you can get a lot of experience running
them. Dryland physical training may also be held and it is also not mandatory,
but you are welcome to participate if you would like. We just like
to get out on the snow and have fun racing and hanging out with other ski
bums like us. So if you are new to
the sport, or you were an All-State high school star, SIGN UP TODAY! You
won't regret it! (By the way, your mom said it was O.K.)
2 years ago, we were proud to announce that we have an
official WMU Snowboard Team! This year, the snowboard team will be
doing Giant Slalom racing and we will be trying our hardest to host some freestyle
competitions in our division. This last season, the WMU Snowboard
Team brought home a national championship so our local races are usually pretty
competitive but not without losing the fun atmosphere of going riding with
your buds. The snowboard team will be traveling with the ski team
and going to the same races, so you are also welcome to race on ski's and
a snowboard.
If you are interested in joining, be sure to
stop by our booth at Bronco Bash which is held Aug 30th on the first official day of
classes.
